"...meditation is the skill of observing and understanding one's own self by means of observation and absorption."

"When we persist in this respiration and are not confused by any distraction, we will see only breaths.
We will be neither disturbed nor distracted..."

A clear explanation and practical guide for beginning and advanced meditators by Venerable Subhuti Shibuya, Wakeful starts from the basic confrontation in life and leads the reader through the details of meditation along the path to enlightenment and nirvana (simply freedom from any kind of pain). This book is a working guide which shows the common sense and practical effects of meditation, which the author has experienced and shared with practitioners in all corners of the world. Wakeful is based not only on the Theravada Buddhist Cannon, but also on Shibuya Sensei's personal life-long quest which led him through over 40 years of monastic practice in Japan, India and the United States.

 Editor's Preface

HISTORY:
The first edition was completed in 1994, and published in 1996 by Purple Iris Press while going out of business. The 2nd edition was revised and extended slightly, and presented in a format closer to the author's initial design by Bodhi's Press in 2000. Actually, I am Bodhi's Press. I began editing Wakeful in 1993, and helped prepare it for Purple Iris Press. Then with copies in hand, I submitted it to a handful of publishing companies to no avail. Around 1999, without a publisher's backing, I decided it would be simpler to publish it myself (and maybe a little interesting as well). So jokingly, I said "Bodhi's Press" would publish it, referring to my Buddhist name "Bodhi".

I printed 1500 copies, registered it with an ISBN, the library of congress, and the US copyright office. I briefly tried marketing it through complementary mailings to meditation centers around the country, Amazon.com (they have no more copies), The Bodhi Tree Bookstore in LA, Soulscape books/etc in Encinitas, but saw that marketing would take too much time from my day job (physicist). After providing copies for sale at the Chapel of Awareness in Encinitas and Dharma Vijaya Buddhist Vihara in LA, I retired Bodhi's Press a few years later. My goal was never to become a full-time publisher, rather it was to print copies of my teacher's book both as a gift to him and as a gift to those who may study with him. I was not trying to accumulate good karma points or anything silly, I am just so moved by what I have learned -- to experience jhana -- that it's a pleasure to provide such a clear description to my friends and other persons interested in meditation. Copies are currently available from the author or myself and may be ordered online below.
